Ayesha Takia’s sister prepares for Bollywood

The Mod actor’s younger sister has been working towards a filmi career for a while now, and if all goes well she will soon finalise her debut film

The voluptuous Ayesha Takia has definitely put films low on her priority list, but she isn’t giving up on the glamour industry completely. The Mod actor has been busy grooming her little sis Natasha for the big and bad world of Bollywood. For almost a year, the two have been hunting for a perfect launch pad, but Ayesha says the search might end soon. She reveals, “A lot of people have been offering her (Natasha) films. As of now, she is reading two scripts and will be finalising one very soon.” It seems like the caring sister has finally found a fitting launch for her baby sister. If you think that Ayesha’s sister will be just like her, you are mistaken. If Ayesha is chalk, then Natasha is like cheese. The 20-something aspirant sports dark-painted nails, body piercing and tattoos. In fact, unlike her sister, Natasha doesn’t harbour any inhibitions when it comes to kissing and showing a little bit of skin for the screen. She says as long as it fits in well in the script, she wouldn’t mind it. It seems she has already learnt the tricks of the trade. Thank God Natasha has chosen to be her own individual and not follow her sister’s path in films.

I was one of the few who knew about Salman’s pain: ‘Bodyguard’ gal Hazel Keech

This gorgeous import from London has worked in one of the biggest Hollywood film series – the Harry Potter movies – and more recently in one of Bollywood’s biggest hits: Bodyguard. She speaks about her filmi aspirations and more…

A self-proclaimed Destiny’s child, she made her way into Bollywood thanks to a leisure holiday that led her into modelling, after which a Tamil film fell straight into her lap. While most strugglers spend more than half their lives trying to get a single assignment, Hazel Keech had luck on her side when Salman Khan made her dream come true
Did you always want to be in films?
I am half-Indian and half-British, but ever since I remember, I always wanted to be in films. As a teenager I had joined Bollywood dance class in London and the only thing I ever wanted to do was to entertain. I grew up on a staple diet of black and white Hindi classics, thanks to my mom and grandma; some of Vyjayantimala’s films are my first connect with entertainment. As I wasn’t sure how I would make it to Bollywood, I was simultaneously training myself in western classical dance forms as well. But a holiday in India changed my life, thanks to a modelling agency which spotted me and gave me the opportunity to do a music video that got me noticed.
In the Tamil film I did (a remake of Shahrukh Khan’s Don), I played Helen’s role and died after the item number (she makes a sad face). I went through a bit of a struggle, but a chance meeting with Salman Khan made my dream come true. I had told him some time in 2008 that I was struggling to get into films and there was no work coming my way. He was kind enough to remember that and, after a few months, Atul Agnihotri (producer of Bodyguard) called me over and there I was, making my dream debut in a Salman Khan film!
Have you been getting film offers by the dozen post Bodyguard?
Yes, there have been quite a few offers, but I am way too superstitious to let you in on that. I would rather my work speak for me. I remember not telling anyone after bagging the role in Bodyguard; just my immediate family knew about it.
During the shooting of Bodyguard did you notice Salman was in pain?
I was one of the few people who knew what Salman was going through, but he was a thorough professional and never made a fuss about his trauma.
What was Kareena Kapoor like as a co-star?
Though she is such a big star, she was very chilled out during the shoot. She never threw tantrums and we all actually ate lunch together. Towards the end of the film’s shooting we got very friendly and started hanging out together.
What kind of roles are you being offered?
All kinds of roles are coming my way, but I would prefer doing a lead role now. Having said that, I am an entertainer at heart and would love to go wherever my work takes me… Argentina, Japan, Chennai or wherever else, it doesn’t matter. I would like to do films that I will be remembered for, like Mother India – it may not have been a blockbuster back then, but it is a classic and nobody can deny that.
What about item numbers – would you like to do one?
Absolutely! I am an entertainer, as I said, and I am a trained dancer – you’d be surprised, but I have learned Kathak too! Though Shahrukh Khan’s Chaiyyan chaiyyan is the iconic item number of Bollywood, my all-time favourite will always be Madhuri Dixit’s Choli ke peechhe kya hai. We used to dance to her songs and try to imitate her, back in London. I love Madhuri’s latka-jhatkas! Actually I love anything that Madhuri does. So yes, I would love to do an item number – that would be serious fun.
You are totally smitten by cinema…
Totally! I have been in love with the magic of cinema ever since I can remember. I watch all kinds of films and I have a special liking for Anurag Kashyap’s quirky films; they are not your typical Bollywood fare, they are ‘Hindi cinema’. I can see that there is a happy co-existence of meaningful cinema and art-house ones, which is a wonderful thing to happen. Of late, I have been thoroughly impressed by Zoya Akhtar’s films, especially her first (Luck By Chance), which I can relate to so well. So, yes, I am here to entertain, irrespective of language or geographical boundaries, and to be a part of some beautiful and memorable films which people will fondly talk about and, for me, the journey has just begun.

Ayesha Takia: I don’t want to be a bimbette in the background

After a short break Ayesha Takia, happily settled into married life, returns to the silver screen with Nagesh Kukunoor’s Mod. In a quick chat the talented actor reveals that henceforth she will only do roles that will go down in the history of worthwhile Hindi cinema

While everyone thought that Ayesha Takia would not act after her marriage to long-time beau Farhan Azmi, she did not think so. She wanted to do films that would touch and move her and her fans. So once again she teamed up with her rakhi brother and favourite filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor for his forthcoming Mod. Apart from her personal rapport with the director, Ayesha says, “The role is a woman-centric one, but apart from that I am a sucker for romance. So if someone is trying to tell a story about love, I would love to be part of it. When Nagesh said it’s his first love story and it centres around the journey of this girl, I was excited to do it. And it has proven to be so, as I have watched the film several times and thoroughly loved it.”
Though Mod is a love story, it is a remake of a Taiwanese film called Keeping Watch. Did she watch the original film? First, a correction: “It is an inspiration and not a remake,” and then, “No, I haven’t watched it. I don’t like to watch the original because as an actor, even subconsciously, I don’t want to take anything from another actor. I wanted to play it my way, so I did not watch it.”
Unlike Ayesha’s earlier films, Mod isn’t a conventional song and dance masala movie. Does that mean she will no longer do any jhatkas and matkas onscreen for her fans? “I would love to be part of films that are great fun and not just where I have to be a bimbette in the background. It has to a role that is dignified,” says the actor and continues, “I totally love those films, but as an actor everyone evolves and wants to do different things in life. I just want to do things that I can be proud of in the future.” And by that, she means a role that would be remembered even ten years down the line, something like her character in Dor.
Now that is very rare in our film industry. Roles like that are usually written for a handful stars (usually top ranking actors). However, that doesn’t bother her. Ayesha says, “You know, I don’t think about business of cinema or the market forces or what goes on behind the scenes. I am very fortunate that despite coming from a non-film background, as an actor I get to do good work. My journey in Bollywood has been great, especially as I have never been strategic about my next move or ultra ambitious. I am sure that people who are planning a career a different way might be, but it’s never been about being number one, two or three. I do what makes me happy. I have been fortunate to get roles that fit into my lifestyle. I am very fussy and choosy actor about a lot of things.”
Don’t think that she is twiddling her thumbs waiting for an interesting script. Ayesha has turned into a businesswoman, helping her hotelier-husband in their hospitality business. Recently she started a café – Chai Coffi – in Mumbai and very soon wants to open a boutique hotel in Goa. And that’s the big change in her life post the wedding in March 2009. “Life’s pretty much same after marriage, except that I am doing more in the restaurants and hotels business. That’s the only change in my life,” smiles the pretty lady.
But she isn’t interested in going all businessy when it comes to movies, perhaps to become a producer, like Lara Dutta, Dia Mirza and Ameesha Patel. “Not at all. As I said, the business of cinema is something that I have never really understood or something that I want to get into. I only want to be a creative part.” And that means it’s going to be a long wait, because this actor wants substance over commercial success.

Kangna Ranaut calls Bollywood actors ‘unstylish’

Recently at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW), Kangna got pretty vocal when someone asked her about B-town’s fashion sense

After walking the ramp for designer Shantanu Goenka and sashaying along the runway with absolute élan, this sexy babe showed us her outspoken side. Dressed in a white and beige gown, Kangna Ranaut was at her candid best when asked about the style quotient of our hoity-toity actors in B-town. She tried her best to sound politically correct, but what she blurted was nothing less than fiendish. According to the actor, people in B-town are not very stylish, except for her contemporaries Priyanka Chopra and Sonam Kapoor. She thinks they are the true style icons of this industry. Now we didn’t expect Kangna to badmouth the same fraternity she belongs to, the one that pays for her bread, butter, make-up, vacations at exotic places, designer clothes, et al. We agree Kangna’s fashion sense is pretty exotic and cool, but we wonder what gives her liberty to think that she is the ultimate style goddess of B-town. Well, we guess the deluge of controversies revolving around the hot babe (remember Paris Hilton, Adhyayan Suman) is taking a toll on not just the actor’s mind, but also the way she’s choosing her movies, her recent film Rascals and, of course, the to-be-released Miley Na Miley Hum along with Chirag Paswan being the solid proof here!

Bigg Boss 5: Poonam Pandey to be a contestant

The starlet will enter the house and even go semi nude!

Amar Upadhyay and Shakti Kapoor are in for a treat. Poonam Pandey has reportedly agreed to be a part of Bigg Boss 5. The aspiring model first shot to fame when she said she will pose nude if India wins the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. Of course, she later didn’t, but her proclamation brought her a lot of notoriety. Apparently, the Bigg Boss 5 guys hope that her fame will draw in more viewers to the show. Poonam was to enter the show right from the beginning, but she insisted she wanted a special entry into the house, and not just be one of the 14 contestants. That’s why she waited two weeks to enter the house, and that too as a special guest for a few days. We are guessing her entry is going to cause a lot of bitchiness among the other female contestants. But will that make the show worthy to watch? Tell us!

Aishwarya attends Amitabh’s poetry event

While Big B recited the Hanuman Chalisa along with other renowned playback singers, daughter-in-law focused on hiding her eight-month tummy

Several Bollywood celebs, including Jaya Bachchan, Yash Chopra, Prakash Jha, Manoj Tiwari and others were recently seen at the launch of this devotional song sung by Amitabh Bachchan and twenty other singers. The music has been composed by Aadesh Srivastava under the Veecon music label. Daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan too made it to the event to support Big B, though hubby Abhishek was missing. Ash, who is aware that all eyes were on her baby bump did pretty well to hide her tummy with her dupatta. It’s something that the Bachchan bahu has become a pro at, no?

Shahid Kapoor cheers for Priyanka Chopra

The Mausam actor was seen at a recent event to support co-star and ex-girlfriend Priyanka Chopra as she was being crowned the best dressed lady

Apart from Karan Johar, Manish Malhotra, Imran Khan, Dia Mirza, Urmila Matondkar and her parents, Priyanka Chopra’s rumoured ex-boyfriend Shahid Kapoor was also present to cheer her as she was being crowned the best dressed lady of 2011 by a popular magazine. And this got too many tongues wagging and minds wondering about their personal equation. Anyway at the event Priyanka made a dazzling entry on the ramp in a lehnga styled by Bollywood’s favourite designer, Manish Malhotra. Her dear friend Shahid was spotted rooting for her. Now, if this was an act out of affection and appreciation for PC, then we think it was very sweet of him. So once again the question is what’s brewing between the two friends? Later when asked, Shahid agreed that Priyanka is indeed the best dressed person around. However Priyanka feels that Deepika Padukone is a better dressed celebrity and that she can confidently carry off almost any outfit. Now, while we agree with PC on that we must say that Priyanka is a stunner and the perfect fashion diva.
