Salman Khan’s sister takes a dig at Shahrukh Khan

The Khan war deepens as Sallu’s sister Alvira derides SRK’s latest film, RA.One

News is that the Shahrukh Khan-Salman Khan war, that began at Katrina Kaif’s birthday bash three years ago, has gone on to an unexpected level altogether. While the two heroes have often taken turns at making snide remarks about each other’s work – with Sallu’s new friend Aamir Khan also joining the fray often – their families have always stayed out of it. Till now. With Bodyguard doing good business and RA.One being panned by all, it seems Sallu’s sister Alvira (who, with her husband Atul Agnihotri, produced Bodyguard) just couldn’t resist taking a potshot at her brother’s rival. Happy at all the RA.One-Bodyguard jokes doing the rounds, she added one more to the list: Even a superhero needs a Bodyguard! Worse, she put it up as the status message on her Blackberry smartphone. What everyone is wondering is whether the comment was Alvira’s brainchild or whether Salman put her up to it. Of course, those close to the Khan sister claim it was just a joke and not meant to hurt anyone. We think it was not a dig, but rather, more of an offer of help. Given that too many of his fans are unhappy with Ra.One, SRK might really need some protection from the overzealous ones. And who better than Sallu to ward them off? What say, Shahrukh?

LOOT Movie Review: Downhill all the way

Govinda’s film is a painful reminder of the collapse of the comic caper in Bollywood, but it’s still better than Rascals

There is a don (oh, there are many of them peeping out of every nook and cranny of this abominable comedy) played by Prem Chopra who loves Meena Kumari and Pakeezah. Sighing loudly he tells another don, played with lipsmacking relish by Mahesh Manjrekar, ‘They don’t make heroines like Meena Kumari any more. She was someone you wanted to marry. Nowadays the heroines are good for only one thing’. That is just about the most subtle dialogue you will get to hear in this in-your-face farce where three small-time wastrels – Govinda, Jaffrey and Mahaakshay, and a scowling goon Suniel Shetty – take off to Pattaya. What follows is a fiesta of fatuous gags and dialogues including of course, bad puns on ‘pattaya’ and ‘guard’. Wouldn’t miss out on that.
Loot looks like an unfinished product from a group of actors and technicians who lost their way in transit. This one should have ideally remained in the cans. Just why Suniel invested into this piece of filmed garbage is anyone’s guess.
May be he thought it would be a fun caper, a sort of Oceans 11 with lots of lowbow jokes about ‘andar daalĂ and ‘baahar khol’. Come on! Crudity by its very nature requires a very high amount of discipline and dedication to be convincing and inoffensive on scene. The crassness in Loot is simply boring. The characters are most frequently seen lolling around in hotel rooms, waiting for the dialogue writer to come up with some more oafish innuendos. In the meanwhile there is a whole truckload of gangsters, goons, dons and hoodlums waiting to pounce on the plot at the drop of a hat. The world never seemed more unsafe.
Govinda’s habitual abilities to improvise do see some of the scenes to a kind of culmination. And Suniel remains true to his character, while Manjrekar along with his sidekick Razaak Khan share the film’s only genuinely funny sequence. But most of the time, the actors seem as clueless about their next move as the scriptwriter. So they just decide to have fun with the pun.
Somewhere in the initial reels singer Mika and starlet Kim Sharma (long time no see) pop up as part of a street gang in Pattaya. They add considerably to the overall confusion of the proceedings. Really, you’d need nerves of steel to sit through this mishmash of misdirected mirth and over-done cockiness. The actors try hard not to look bored. The performances in this deflated farce are better than the recent Rascals where the actors tried hard to be funny. Here no one makes an effort except the dialogue writer who seems to be falling off his chair in delight at his torrent of double entendres.
If only we knew what was so funny. Loot is a hoot. And a painful reminder of the collapse of the comic caper in Bollywood in a heap of inadequacy. The writing reaches a stalemate even before the actors warm up to their roles. And then it’s downhill all the way.
Film: Loot; Cast: Govinda, Suniel Shetty, Javed Jaffrey, Mahaaskshay Chakbraborty, Ravi Kissan and Prem Chopra; Director; Rajneesh Thakur.

Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra in DON 2

Check out the new poster of Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2

It seems that 2011 belongs to Shahrukh Khan. Even before the euphoria of his superhero film RA.One settles down, the promotion of his next action-thriller film have begun. The trailer of the fim is very impressive and truly world-class. King Khan as the bad guy has apparently perfected the ‘Don’ act this time around, which was missing in his first outing. According to the trailer, Don surrenders himself to Malik (Om Puri) and Roma (Priyanka Chopra) after which he flees with his enemy-turned-friend, Vardhan (Boman Irani). Going by this logic, this new poster seems a little strange because it shows that the Don is angry while Roma is smiling. Shouldn’t it be the other way round? Also, now that Roma knows that Don is not the same bumpkin who had replaced him, she has no reason to be smiling around him; he killed her brother in cold-blood, after all. Another thing which made us scratch our heads was, why is the King back? Shouldn’t it be – The Don Is Back? Or is there more to this King guy? Is he the surprise element of this sequel? That leaves us with another idea, probably Don re-surfaces with a new identity, as the King. Or is it Shahrukh Khan’s ego trip where he wants the world to know, that he is the King of Bollywood? For now, we give up trying to guess what’s cooking in the minds of SRK and his director Farhan Akhtar. In the meanwhile, you tell us, what you think.

Himesh Reshammiya compares himself to Kishore Kumar!

The Damadamm actor wants to be the ultimate actor-singer-filmmaker just like the maestro

While this news had us laughing out loud, many of you would like to just ignore the parallels that are being drawn here. Himesh bhai who is enjoying all the attention after the release of his film, Damadamm! surely knows how to remain in the headlines forever. If his singing gets monotonous, he resorts to his poker-faced acting and if that doesn’t work then HR, it seems, causes a stir with his words. Remember, how he angered fans when he claimed that the late veteran music-composer and singer RD Burman sang in a nasal tone? This time around, Himesh compares himself with none other than Kishore Kumar, one of the greatest singers and finest actors of all time. Listen to what Himesh said in a recent interview. “Kishore Kumar was the only actor-singer-filmmaker who was successful in all fields and I think I have it in me to surpass the benchmark and reach new levels.” On hearing this, we couldn’t stop laughing. Good luck HR for crossing the benchmark!

Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor maintain a distance

Ranbir Kapoor’s casanova image precedes him, so it comes as a shock when the actor is seen purposely avoiding his Barfee co-star, Priyanka Chopra. Wonder what’s going on?

A li’l birdie from the sets of Barfee reported that Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor have consciously decided to stay away from each other. Now what does that sound like to you? Is all the distance due to a lovers’ tiff or is there more than that meets the eye? But wait! Before you jump to any conclusion, Piggy Chops clears the air and says that her silence is just a way of getting into her character in Barfee. Apparently, Priyanka is playing a mentally challenged girl and Ranbir is playing the role of a deaf and dumb person. In order to add depth to their respective characters, the actors have decided to work on it off screen too. Now that’s being truly professional. But we don’t think that’s the whole story. The duo was apparently pretty close during the filming of Anjaana Anjaani, but ex-boyfriend Shahid Kapoor did not appreciate their bonding. Then again that’s the story of the past, considering Ranbir and Priyanka are both single, we can’t stop wondering, why all the aloofness? Guess that’s a question only they can answer!
