LADIES VS RICKY BAHL: Ranveer and his ladies in the new poster

Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma come together for the latest poster of their upcoming film

Check out the new poster of Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma’s second film together, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl. While the first poster showcased only a hot Ranveer, this one has him sharing the limelight with Anushka, Dipannita Sharma, Parineeti Chopra and Aditi Sharma. Looks like even if you are one of those who think the Ranveer-Anushka jodi is getting stale – more due to their off screen shenanigans than their onscreen ones – there are several other jodis for you to enjoy. We just hope this one doesn’t go the Bachna Ae Haseeno way. Three gorgeous ladies romancing one handsome Ranbir Kapoor didn’t do the trick then. So will four ladies and Ranveer work for Yash Raj Films? Tell us what you think!

What makes Ranbir, Abhishek and Ranveer good models?

Fashion photographer Rohan Shrestha tells us who his favourite Bollywood celebrities are and what makes them special

He has a father who has made a huge name with his images of the celebrity denizens of B-town. Now 26-year-old Rohan Shrestha, son of one of Bollywood’s leading photographers, Rakesh Shrestha, is a fashion photographer, a field he stepped into in 2009. And he has managed to work with some of the biggest names in celebville in a short span of time. He insists that he did not piggyback on his father’s standing in the industry to get a foothold of his own. Rohan says, “My father started out on his own, chasing celebrities in the 70s. He wanted me to do the same thing. It is easy for him to make a call, but I didn’t want him to do that.” After doing a basic photography course, Rohan worked as an assistant to few photographers in London and Mumbai. After that he ventured out on his own. Here are some celeb shoots from his portfolio…

Can Arjun Kapoor recreate Ranveer Singh’s success?

Boney Kapoor’s son is only the second hero to be launched by Yash Raj Films. Will he be as lucky as their first?

When Yash Raj Films launched Ranveer Singh, it was a first of sorts for the production house. Never had they launched a male actor before Band Baaja Baaraat. Their gamble paid off and Ranveer went on to become one of the most promising actors of this generation. Now they seem to be getting ready to do it again with Arjun Kapoor, the son of producer Boney Kapoor. Arjun is all set to make his film debut with Ishaqzaade, a YRF production co-starring Priyanka Chopra’s cousin Parineeti. If you’ve seen the poster that was recently released to announce the start of the film’s shoot, you would have noticed that Arjun is quite a good looking guy. He has transformed from being a chubby teen to a really fit, handsome hero, just like several other star kids like Sonakshi Sinha, Jackky Bhagnani and others. The film is, incidentally, being written and directed by Habib Faisal, the same guy who wrote BBB. So now Arjun has everything on his checklist: Good looks, the same successful scriptwriter, the same producer, a romantic movie and Yash Raj’s latest blue-eyed girl as his heroine. So yes, he has the arsenal to battle it out with Ranveer. And with Ranveer going on a self-destructive path (all those controversies with Anushka Sharma, Sonakshi Sinha…tch tch), it seems Arjun has all the luck right now. Yet Ranveer’s still in the running. His look in YRF’s Ladies V/s Ricky Bahl, where he too stars with Parineeti, is already getting some positive buzz. So which YRF actor will finally come out on top? Wethinks it is going to be a tough one! What about you?

Shahrukh’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ upset Manoj Kumar

The legendary actor who pulled the film’s makers to court

Shortly after the release of Om Shanti Om, the makers found themselves in a pickle. The blockbuster had managed to miff Manoj Kumar. The legendary actor wasn’t happy with the way he was spoofed in the film. If you’ve missed the movie and are wondering what the fuss was about, catch it on YouTube Boxoffice. Om Shanti Om is a movie that tried to re-create the filminess of the ’70s, including styles of all the yesteryear actors. One of them happened to be Manoj Kumar, and his signature style of covering his face while reciting his dialogue. While people do relate the actor to his style, Manoj Kumar was annoyed by the way it was portrayed in the movie. So, he filed a case against the makers. On hearing this, Farah Khan and Shahrukh Khan rushed to meet Mr Kumar and make amends. But the matter was put to rest only when Manoj Kumar got a court to order the producers to delete the objectionable scene before the film’s satellite screening. Sigh! Om Shanti Om was surely full of nautanki (drama) off screen too.

Choreographer Uma: There was only singing and playing in ‘Rockstar’

“Ranbir Kapoor would just jam in one corner,” say Uma and Gaiti, the choreographers for Rockstar, who helped the young actor groove with absolute style

Uma and Gaiti for whom choreography extends beyond dancing, have earlier worked on movies like Karthik Calling Karthik and have also done a couple of reality shows. Hence when the duo were asked to choreograph Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar, they  gave their nod to the project without thinking twice, knowing that it’s a music based film and there’s very little scope for hardcore dancing. Of course, they are disappointed about not being able to make Ranbir Kapoor shimmy to their command, but then they stuck their noses to the grindstone and made the Kapoor dude look like a real rockstar by working on his body language…
Did you study any legendary rockstar’s body language before taking on this project?
The director of the film Imtiaz Ali was very specific about what he wanted,
without giving any references. He didn’t want us to copy Jimi Hendrix or
Aerosmith – musicians who have a peculiar style. The only brief given to us was that the boy is from Delhi and is a Jatt. We did it the way he wanted it to be and we happened to be on the same page most of the time.
What aspects of Ranbir did you have to study?
I don’t think we had to study Ranbir at all. Rather, Ranbir looked really well prepared and in his character all the time. In fact, after meeting him we broke away from all the notions and references we ever had of him.
Remember any fun moments while shooting?
The shoot was so calm. There was absolutely no stress and pressure as such.
It was fairly balanced throughout. There were no low points and there were no high points either. About Ranbir – he would just go to one corner and jam. There was only singing and playing the guitar throughout and we loved the
experience…
Working on a reality show and choreographing for a movie are so very different. What’s more gratifying?
They are all different experiences. For us even people walking on the
streets and bumping onto each other is choreography. I enjoy all aspects of
my profession. You need to unite the music with what the director wants and
it’s like the camera dances with whatever you do. Reality shows are more staged and raw.  As far as Rockstar is concerned, me and Gaiti are very happy the way it’s turned out. It looks very real.
Who would you love to choreograph in B-town?
I would say exactly the opposite of what other people say. Of course actors like Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are great dancers and we would love to work with them, but if we get a chance to make someone move who the world doesn’t know as a good dancer, that would be more fun and challenging.
Who’s your favourite rockstar?
I am a Michael Jackson fan. He’s not exactly into rock and stuff, but still, I’ll give it to him…

Silk Smitha’s brother sues ‘The Dirty Picture’ makers

Dirty Picture, the Bollywood bio-pic on southern siren Silk Smitha, has run into trouble. The late actor’s brother V Naga Vara Prasad has sued Milan Luthria and producer Ekta Kapoor for making the film without the family’s permission

“What right do the producer and the director have to make this film, without the family’s consent. Neither the producer nor the director contacted us,” says Prasad.
Silk Smitha’s brother Prasad said that he had sent a legal notice to the makers of The Dirty Picture. He claims that the film is obscene and no one from the film took his family’s permission before making it. Apparently, Ekta Kapoor and team have based their film on the inputs provided by Silk Smitha’s alleged boyfriend in Chennai. Prasad who is an agriculturalist in a report made it clear that he did not file the case for monetary gains. According to sources, the reports of Silk Smitha committing suicide due to financial problems are not entirely true. After receiving no response from the initial legal notice, Prasad intends to send another one soon. The makers of the film, launched the music of The Dirty Picture on Friday where Vidya Balan mesmerised her fans with a live performance. The film is set to release on December 2, this year.

Bhupen Hazarika passes away

The legendary Assamese singer-composer passed away after fighting for life in hospital

Bhupen Hazarika, veteran classical music director and singer, passed away in a Mumbai hospital today. He was 85. The legend had been ill for the past few months after a bout of pneumonia. He was critically ill and on dialysis when he died. The Padma Bhushan awardee was not just a singer-songwriter, but an acclaimed poet, journalist, filmmaker and writer.
Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926 in Sadiya, Assam. He completed his education from Guwahati and Banaras Hindu University. He completed his PhD in Mass Communication from Columbia University. He received three National Film Awards for his films Shakuntala, Pratidhwani and Loti Ghoti. He has composed music for numerous Hindi, Bengali and Assamese films. His Bollywood films included Rudaali, Gajagamini, Arop, Papiha, Ek Pal, Pratimurti, Saaz, Darmiyaan, Mil Gayee Manzil Mujhe, Daman and Kyon among others. He was in a relationship with filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi for many years and scored for her films.

MILEY NAA MILEY HUM movie review: Too predictable

This is a benign film, innocuous in its intentions and harmless if somewhat pointless too. There are absolutely no villains in the script. In fact some of the people populating the plot seem to belong to another planet in their goodness

There are some unexpected surprises in this sleeper rom-com, newcomer Chirag Paswan being one of them. In a tailor-made role that projects him as an ideal son, considerate boss, supportive friend and sensitive lover, Chirag doles out the schmaltz and the sweetness without tripping over his own goodness.
Dalip Tahil in a turban stops his spunky daughter (Neeru Bajwa)’s engagement when he gets to know his best friend Kabir Bedi nursed a secret desire to see his hon-haar son (Chirag) married to the almost-engaged girl. The hero is an angel in designer-disguise. He drives the best cars, wears the best sunglasses, romances a struggling model (Kangna Ranaut, struggling to shrug off her emotionally traumatised image) and yet sits with the staffers of his imperious father’s sprawling vineyard for a meal of roti and achaar.
The core idea of the film is to propagate a kind of picture-postcard bonhomie into the plot. The worst thing that happens in the hero’s life is that his parents are separated. But that’s hardly a deterrent for his life being a seriously satirical celebration of slow-motion joys that include romancing three ladies, two chosen by his respective parents and one chosen off a hoarding by Chirag himself. Kangna as the struggling model who keeps bumbling into hard surfaces (including hero) has an interesting believable part. She starts off being a casualty of her own ambitions and then gradually gets closer to her real emotions.
Nice touch, that one. The tennis backdrop, though never done with the professionalism that hockey achieved in Chak De (and never mind Sagarika Ghosh the actress who played one of the hockey players in Chak De, surfacing in Miley Naa Miley Hum as Chirag’s potential biwi). It’s all too pretty, too predictable and too soft and gentle to make a lasting impact. But the heart is the right place. And you can’t help smiling at the world that the film encompasses with such tender hands that don’t want to brush against any evil. Debutant Chirag Paswan is likeable when he isn’t caught out ‘acting’. He comes with the added burden of having to prove he isn’t just the brat with the golden spoon. He conducts himself with reasonable aplomb in a film that’s just a wee bit different from the boy-meets-girl routine.
