Can ‘Bigg Boss’ be made into a good Bollywood film?

Akshay Kumar definitely thinks so. The Desi Boyz actor recently claimed that he wants to make a film on the concept of Bigg Boss– only this one will be scripted like any other film

Fourteen actors will play characters stuck in a house for a TV show, till one of them is murdered. And then the quest begins to try and figure out who the murderer is before someone else gets hurt. It’s not a totally new concept – Dhund, Gumnaam and Khamosh have all had similar plotlines, but none of them revolve around a TV show. While we agree that Bigg Boss will make for interesting movie viewing, we also wonder which other reality show (except Kaun Banega Crorepati) can be translated on to the big screen…
Indian Idol / Just Dance: The perfect vehicle for a relative newcomer to play an underdog who against all odds goes on to become a singing/ dancing sensation. Maybe even add a boodhi maa, andhi behen (elderly mother, blind sister) touch to it.
Live My Life: A movie star meets his fan. While she gets a glimpse of the gritty realities behind the camera, he gets back in touch with the real world. Of course, they have to fall in love too. Where’s the fun otherwise?
The Khan Sisters: Two hot girls who have no qualms revealing their secret desires and showing off their figures. So what if Girlfriend didn’t work? Bring together Poonam Pandey and Sherlyn Chopra, have them do what they do best, and you don’t have to worry about empty theatres at all.
The Amazing Race: It hits all the key notes of a Bollywood film – great locations, romance, potential for comedy, emotional scenes and songs. With road trips being all the rage after Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, you can’t deny it’s perfect.
Jhalak Dikhla Jaa: So many actors are aspiring to be item girls nowadays. Why not have all of them come together for a film with only item numbers? Add a wafer-thin plot to keep critics happy and call the entire film a musical!
Swayamvar: This one has loads of potential – especially if it’s a female who has to choose a spouse. It can have everything – love, sex, deception, broken hearts, sad songs and a happy ending where love will triumph. Isn’t that great?

Ready: A critical view

While Sallu bhai was riding high on the success of Ready, the critics didn’t sound too happy. Find out what the critics said, and tell us what you think about Salman Khan’s Ready!

Mayank Shekhar, Hindustan Times: One Ram Pothineni plays hero in the original Ready. Salman is at present the closest North India might get to a Rajinikanth. He doesn’t play a role. The character plays Salman. Sometimes he doesn’t bother lip-synching to his own lines, wanders around disinterestedly, often looks straight to the camera that’s as much in love with this casualness.  Salman’s re-grounded masala (Wanted, Dabanng) is still novel for the time being. He walks into Gaiety to briefly say ‘hi’ to his audiences. There’s a special NGO screening for the underprivileged (like me). This is the pocket where Salman’s truly King Khan: whistles, roars, hooting never stop. The mayhem’s hard to describe. It’s a pop-cultural experience all right, and fully worth it. Unfortunately, there’s also an entire film to sit through. Ah, my neck hurts!
Kaveree Bamzai, India Today: The film is pretty much a showcase for what Salman Khan does best-which is fight, dance, charm the girls, and laugh lazily at everyone. An assortment of ugly relatives, even uglier villains and a plot that makes no sense at all. None of it matters. Salman Khan is deep in the middle of the greatest love affair of his life-with his audience. And one hopes it lasts longer than his past girlfriends.
Rajeev Masand: To describe this film as paisa vasool or time pass is to confess that you really don’t have a life. Because apart from two energetically filmed songs – Character dheela hai and Dhinka chika – this film offers little by way of entertainment. Salman Khan fans, I assure you that reruns of his Dus Ka Dum episodes on Youtube are more likely to make you smile than this agonizingly boring film that wastes the charm of its immensely charismatic star.
Nikhat Kazmi, TNN: Yup, bahut mazaa aaya. But only if you set aside all pretensions of going for a regular, mind-teaser movie. The rest of the characters too are all a crazy bunch. The umpteen men, women and boys — you lose count of them — speak silly, speak shrieky. The music (Pritam) plays at deafening decibel levels. The canvas and the colours of the film are garish and loud. And there isn’t a moment of repose to allow you to think…. Go celebrate the cornball comic display by Salman Khan. You won’t get bored.

Is Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Don 2′ inspired by ‘Prison Break’?

An insider tells us that Farhan Akhtar’s Don sequel is similar to the popular American TV series

Inspiration can come from anywhere and Bollywood is the place where inspirations rule the roost. Sometimes credited in the film, sometimes not, this trend has been around for quite some time. Just when we were preparing to meet the Don 2 team at a promotional event, an insider whispered in our ears that the idea of Don getting into a Malaysian jail to free Vardhan (Boman Irani) is based on the theme of Prison Break, the popular American TV series which ended in 2009. The source also added that the international look and feel of the film comes from the same series. While we aren’t totally sure about this ‘inspiration’ we also cannot pretend that it is mere coincidence. Director Farhan Akhtar is known for his original ideas, but does that mean he can never be inspired? There is also the possibility that Farhan followed the show when it was on air and the idea stuck with him while he was writing the Don sequel. May be it was King Khan himself who suggested the idea to Farhan. Whatever the case is, we loved the promo of the film as it takes Bollywood to a new high, as far as the world-class production value of the film is concerned. We will save our verdict about the film till we watch it on the big screen.

Akshay Kumar and Sonu Sood vie for hit song ‘Appdi Podu’

Both actors have acquired remake rights of the popular Tamil song. Wonder who will finally groove to the chartbuster

Don’t yet start dreaming of shaking booty on the Hindi equivalent of the Tamil chartbuster Appdi Podu. Sonu Sood who is supposed to have acquired the remake rights of the groovy number from southern film Ghilli has recently found out that Akshay Kumar too has got the remake rights of the song. Apparently, when Sonu approached Vidyasagar, the original composer of the song, for the Hindi version he was unaware that Akki too was in talks for the remake rights. So now there is slight confusion on who will groove to the chartbuster. It comes as no surprise that Chedi Singh of Dabangg is in no mood to fight any battles with his Singh is Kingg co-star. We don’t blame the actor for not taking the big star to court for this! Anyway, Sonu says, “There is some kind of confusion but we will sort it out. I am not here to fight legal battles. Whoever gets it, Akshay or me, it doesn’t matter.” Maybe not for Akshay who already has dime a dozen chartbusters in his kitty, but for Sonu this could be a highpoint in his Bollywood career, which by number have been very few. The popular actor had bought the song for his first home production Lucky Unlucky. Mallika Sherawat, the film’s leading lady, and he were expected to groove to it. According to our sources, Vidyasagar composed the Hindi version and Sunidhi Chauhan and Mika were set to sing it. Finally, we don’t care who gets the rights to the remake, we are simply glad that now we will have a version that’s comprehendible and can be sung.

Salman Khan approached for yet another south remake, ‘Arya 2’

The actor is considering the option of starring in yet another remake, and honestly we won’t be surprised if he gives it a nod, after all, remakes seem to be extremely lucky for Mr Khan

After Wanted, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Kick and Kanchana the actor has been approached for yet another remake. Keen to have Salman as a part of the project, Ronnie Screwwala approached Salman for the lead role in the Hindi version of the Telugu blockbuster Arya 2. We think the actor should accede to the producer’s request without thinking twice as the film is a love story and it would be quite a refreshing break for Salman to step into the shoes of a lover boy and leave his violent streak behind. Sallu Bhai apparently was also approached for the remake of Mahesh Babu’s Dookudu, but the actor didn’t take that up as it required him to slip into a Khaki uniform. And after playing the quintessential street-smart cop in his previous hits Dabangg and Wanted, the actor doesn’t want to become repetitive. Well, we must say Khan bhai has come up with an amazingly cool strategy of doing remakes to keep his filmy career intact. Anyway, originality is an alien word in B-town and Mr Khan is just another victim of this immensely popular trend.

LOVE 2 HATE U: Arjun Rampal plays coolLOVE 2 HATE U: Arjun Rampal plays coo l; Madhur Bhandarkar gets defensive

In his new show, RA.One manages to convert one hater, but his Heroine director doesn’t manage to do the same

The new television show, Love 2 Hate U is one of its kind and will certainly get a lot of viewers for the channel. The format is unique – the makers find the biggest anti-fan a Bollywood celeb can have and put him or her face to face with that celeb. It’s a star’s worst nightmare, and the hater’s biggest opportunity. The first two celebs on the show were Arjun Rampal (who is also the host) and director Madhur Bhandarkar. Arjun confronted his hater Farhan by first intimidating him, then irking him by taking potshots at his sense of humour and finally by buying him a drink. Rampal played the ‘Mr Cool’ card well and ended up converting the hater into almost a gushing fanboy. Bhandarkar, on the other hand, tried too hard to convince his hater and didn’t get anywhere. The girl who hated him had very pointed views about Bhandarkar’s formula of filmmaking. While she did agree that a few of his earlier films were good, ever since he discovered his formula of ‘realistic’ film making it has been a downward spiral, she insisted. Bhandarkar tried to convince her otherwise by giving her some insight into the struggle he goes through for every film, but the hater couldn’t care less. While we aren’t taking sides here we must comment that the show is nicely presented and is fun to watch and we will do so…for a while at least. We found this interesting reaction to it all – “Either celeb or the hater should die or at least sustain severe injuries #Love2HateU.” And what do you think about this new show?
