Why are Bolly-babes all bandaged up?

No, don’t worry, none of them are hurt or injured. It’s just that there’s yet another quirky style that has invaded B-town for quite a while now

Though it’s a pretty old trend, the ladies do dig this convenient outfit out of their closets every now and then and flaunt it. Sussanne Roshan and Nargis Fakhri donned it recently. And so have many others in the fairly recent past. It’s a trend that’s derived from an era in which even our great-grandfathers didn’t exist. Herve Leger came up with the bright idea of showing off womanly curves by creating dresses made of bandage-like strips, body hugging enough to flaunt hourglass figures. And these Bollywood beauties have taken to them big time and don’t mind looking like stylish Egyptian mummies. We just hope a palaeontologist doesn’t carry them off to a research lab to explore what lies beneath. But then, not much would change – the industry may just run short of a couple of hoity-toity members…

Some of the actors who have donned this interesting bandage look at various events…

You can look like an Egyptian mummy now if you like, considering that it’s become a very common and economical style. You can pick up yours from:

Forever new – Plain black bandage dress – Rs. 5000
French Connection – colours available (black,brown,blue)- Rs. 7000 approx
Ibizza (Bandra W) – colours available (black, orange, contrast shades, red) – Rs. 5000-8000
Kazo – Cream bandage dress -  Rs. 2900

BEJAWADA movie review: Another dud from RGV

After giving a couple of box office duds in Hindi, Ram Gopal Varma has returned to Telugu. Unfortunately his over-hyped films made at shoestring budgets without any seriousness meet with below average response at the box office. His recent production venture Bejawada, directed by Vivek Krishna, is another addition to the list of his senseless films

A small percentage of Telugu audience had some hope from Bejawada because of the casting and pre-release hype.  In 1989, Varma brought a breath of fresh air in the Telugu film industry with Shiva and Kshanam Kshanam. After that he shifted to Bollywood and made successful films like Rangeela and Satya. But after Sarkar, he has not delivered any successful Hindi movie. He met with the same fate in the Telugu film industry after making insignificant films like Dongala Muta.  Varma tried to create curiosity about Bejawada by using a controversial title, but couldn’t succeed. The title created controversy as Varma announced that he will focus on the activities of the underworld in Vijayawada city (Bejawada) which saw many fights and violent deaths. The rivalry between Vangaveeti Radha and his opponents resulted in bloodshed.  But Varma’s film does not have any incidents related to either Radha or his brother Ranga who became a torch bearer of his family’s underworld activities.  “Bejawada” story cannot be linked to any other city. The film is neither thought provoking nor realistic. It fails to connect to the audience mainly because of the poor handling of the subject by the director.
The story revolves around Siva Krishna, who is seeking revenge for his brother Vijaya Krishna’s death. The film is so amateurishly made that you feel sorry for Naga Chaithanya for accepting it. If his earlier film Dada was a forgettable movie, Bejawada makes you wonder whether his father, actor Nagarjuna, had heard the script before his son signed the film.  Amala Paul, the talented actor, has also been wasted. Prabhu and Mukul Dev have done their best in the poorly written film. The veteran artists have tried to make an impact, but their roles suffer because of bad characterisation.  As far as the music is concerned, too many cooks have spoiled the broth.  Vivek Krishna has written a poor script and inserted rehashed sequences of Varma’s previous films. The narrative is so bad that you lose interest in the beginning itself. Even an expert editor like Gautham Raju has failed to present a neatly edited movie.  Bhupathi Raju’s camera work is also weak.  In short, Bejawada is a wasted effort.

Dharam Dev Anand (September 26, 1923-December 3, 2011): The legend passes away

Actor-filmmaker Dev Anand passed away on Saturday night following a cardiac arrest in London, imprinting his footprints in the entertainment world forever…

Known for his evergreen aura, Dharam Dev Anand has perhaps being the most prolific and versatile member of the Bollywood fraternity. Treating age just like any other figure, Dev saab’s contribution to the industry will be remembered forever. Movies like Guide and Gambler have been such huge blockbusters that the actor was given sobriquets like ‘Raju guide’ and ‘the great gambler’. He was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002. The actor apparently liked to be on his own. He believed that an artiste has to isolate himself so that he can focus on his work. Sticking to his ideology, the actor preferred leading a simple life and never ruled out the possibility of falling in love again. Trudging through quite an interesting and long journey, from his first movie Hum Ek Hain (1946) to the last one Chargesheet (2011), this legend and his enthusiasm to work and live life to the fullest, will be missed. B-town mourns the death of this talented actor and so do the great number of fans who have grown up watching this expressive performer’s movies. Jewel Thief, Heera Panna, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Johnny Mera Naam and Asli-Naqli – have been some of the actor’s best projects. He may be no more but his youthfulness is sure to inspire many actors in the future.

Dev Anand: Bollywood’s greatest discoverer

The late Dev Anand had a career spanning around six decades, during which he donned several hats including those of director, producer and actor. There is one more lesser known aspect: casting director. Though you may not find him mentioned as such in the credits of his films, several B-Town actors will tell you they are grateful to him for bringing him into the industry. We tell you more about them:

Zeenat Aman: Officially, Dev Anand’s Hare Rama Hare Krishna is not her first film, but that’s the one that made Zeenat a star. She was one sexy sister of the hero and stole the show from the film’s female lead, Mumtaz. Her song Dum maaro dum from the film is an icon even today.
Tina Ambani: The petite actor was first seen on the big screen in Dev Anand’s Des Pardes. She played an Indian version of My Fair Lady and was an instant hit.
Deepak Sareen: You may remember him as the guy who is in love with Zeenat’s character in Hare Rama Hare Krishna. If you can’t, don’t fret. He is one of the few discoveries who had to really struggle for roles and didn’t quite manage to make it in Bollywood.
Jackie Shroff: Yes, Subhas Ghai gave him his first lead role in Hero, and made Jackie a star. But even before Hero, Dev Anand had cast him in two of his films – a bit role in Heera Panna and a bigger one in Swami Dada. Jackie went on to become one of the top heroes in Bollywood in the late eighties and early nineties.
Tabu: Her first-ever film was Dev saab’s Hum Naujawan, in which she plays a young teenager who is raped and murdered by a powerful minister’s son. Despite having only a small role, she proved, under Dev Anand’s direction, that she was a talented actor years before her others realised it in Maachis.
