Is Shahrukh Khan upset with negative reviews of ‘Don 2′?

Shahrukh Khan has cut short his holiday plans to start working post haste on his next romantic film with Yash Chopra

Shahrukh Khan was recently labelled the ‘most hardworking star of Bollywood’ and it seems that he has taken the moniker a little too seriously. After a gruelling 2011 thanks to his ambitious films RA.One and Don 2, we were happy when we heard that SRK would be taking a long break for some quality family time to recuperate and rejuvenate. He has been all over the globe, shooting and promoting his films and he deserved a vacation, wethought. Now we hear that he has dropped the idea of a long holiday and will settle for four days off with his family and come back early for Yash Chopra’s romantic film that he has signed with Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. This one will be Shahrukh’s return to romance after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which released almost three years ago. His outings as an action hero haven’t been received too well and all the critics have disliked both RA.One and Don 2. His loyal fans have ensured that his films don’t crash at the BO, but it seems that SRK is disappointed by his recent record and wants to do some damage control, for which he is banking on the Yash Chopra film, where he will be seen romancing the Chikni Chameli babe for the first time. As excited as we are about watching SRK stand with his feet apart, fling his arms out, and sing soulfully as a romantic hero once again, we just hope he doesn’t burn himself out with all the hard work that he is putting into his work. We want to see more of him for a long time to come, after all!

Vikram in Bollywood again

South superstar Vikram is planning his second innings in Bollywood. The actor was first seen in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan

Vikram is on seventh heaven with the success of his recent release Rajapattai at the box office. But that’s not the only reason for the star’s happiness. A li’l birdie tells us that Vikram has been signed by Beejoy Nambiar of Shaitan fame for a film. The actor confirms in an interview that director Beejoy has signed him for a movie which is tentatively titled David. He further added that the film is set to go on floors late next year. At present, Vikram is occupied with shoot schedule for two of his movies – Thaandavam directed by Vijay and Karikalan by Kannan. While the former film is a modern action entertainer, the other is a period film, which showcases the life of the Chola king who was responsible for building the 1000 year old Kallanai dam.

Sridevi looks gorgeous in black

Sridevi looks phenomenal in this ensemble. The Chanel neckpiece, the gorgeous black jumpsuit, the multicoloured clutch; we like it all. Fashion-wise, the actor has impressed us already. Let’s see if Mrs Kapoor impresses us acting-wise in her new film  ‘English Vinglish’ that marks her comeback in B-town next year!

Is Shirish Kunder beating his own drum?

The Tees Maar Khan director is tweeting frantically about his upcoming film Joker, from the songs to the actors to the look. Shirish claims that a song sung by Sunidhi Chauhan in the film is going to be the ‘mother of all item songs’. But does his record let us believe it?

Sheila ki jawaani from Shirish Kunder’s Tees Maar Khan was a sensation like no other. Katrina Kaif set the screen ablaze with her sexy moves and paved the way for item songs by big stars to become a more regular feature in our films. Sadly, the film turned out to be a total stinker at the box office and critics loved thrashing it. Two years after the fiasco of Tees Maar Khan director Shirish Kunder is gearing up for his upcoming film Joker starring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha. The film is supposed to be released in August 2012. But more than the story of the film or the performances by his lead actors in it, Shirish is going ga ga over the songs in Joker. Sample this: “Sonu Nigam has sung the title Song of Joker. This ones gonna be the Anthem of 2012” boasts the 38-year-old director. He doesn’t stop there and goes hyper-ambitious about yet another song picturised on Chitrangda Singh: “Sunidhi has sung the Item Song featuring Chitrangda Singh in Joker. This ones gonna be the Mother of all Item Songs” tweeted Shirish. Now we wonder if Mr Farah Khan has anything to say about the story of Joker – or is he making the film to insert his ultra-ambitious item songs into it?

Sherlyn Chopra finally bags a lead role

Sultry babe Sherlyn Chopra, who is known for her bold style statements, gets a golden opportunity to play the lead in a film. Incidentally, the movie is being produced by her…

The sexy siren starlet who was last seen flaunting her hot-bod in YRF’s Dil Bole Hadippa finally decided to take her career in her own hands. The wannabe actor who has in the past confessed to a little snip and tuck to get her shapely self in tone had signed Dhoom, Dhoom 2 and Kidnap fame director Sanjay Gadhvi to write and direct her in a path-breaking role and movie. But if rumour mills are to be believed, it seems that Gadhvi and Sherlyn Chopra are already having disagreements and fights over the script. The duo has even decided to part ways over creative and monetary issues. Now that’s definitely bad news for Sherlyn, who was really hoping to have a ‘Gadhvi film’ on her resume. But nothing can dishearten the leggy lass. The actor has now decided to create the story herself. According to a source, the film with Sherlyn as the lead will be aimed at the youth today. And the story is said to be inspired from real life. While Sherlyn claims to play a sexy Santa, we just hope that the film doesn’t slip down to grade B. Well, we don’t know how a story on a sexy Santa will be path–breaking, but we cross our fingers and hope for her sake that it works! After all, there is nothing more she can change about herself that we can think of…can you?

Shahrukh Khan’s daughter Suhana hates his ‘Don 2′ look!

The superstar claims the child ordered him to get rid of it right away

If you are sick of Shahrukh Khan’s bearded, unkempt look for Don 2, take heart. Your favourite actor has gone back to his cleanshaven look and it’s all thanks to his daughter Suhana. Like us, she too was fed up seeing her dad go around looking like he’s just come out of some Malaysian prison…oh, yes, wasn’t that the idea? Oops! She finally managed to persuade Daddy-dear to get rid of his beard. Shahrukh tweeted, ‘bak to my wakeful nites & clean shaven look. daughter insisted i shave . watched the whole process as if i was americas top model contestant’. Whew. Finally! We are glad. It was a long time coming. Of course, with all the promotional activities planned for Don 2 till now, it was not possible for SRK to go back to being good ol’ Raj, since he had to look like the diabolical Don, no? Now that he’s done with that one, he can do what he – or should we say Suhana? – wants. We are sure he doesn’t need the face fuzz for his next film, the as-yet-untitled Yash Chopra project. Now if only he’ll cut that teeny-weeny ponytail too. It just doesn’t suit him at all. Neither do the cute hair accessories he obviously raids his baby’s dressing table for! Suhana, what do you think?

Will Payal Rohatgi win ‘Survivor India’?

The starlet will compete in the American show’s desi version which will go on air from next month

If you really thought the new year would give you a break from reality shows, then don’t read this. You’ll only be more disappointed. Star Plus wants to start the new year with a new reality show – Survivor India. The adventure reality show is a hit in 48 countries and it seems the channelwallahs are hoping this one will give them a much-needed ratings boost. They’ve even roped in 22 celebrity participants to live on a remote, otherwise uninhabited island of the Phillippines. Those who claim they are up for the challenge include Shilpa Agnihotri, JD Majethia, Sangram Singh, Abhinav Shukla, Karan Patel, Timmy Narang, Sylvester Rodgers, Priyanka Bassi, Rajesh Khera and Munisha Khatwani. Surprisingly, Payal Rohatgi will also be contesting on the show. The starlet was recently in the news for claiming that Bigg Boss 5 was rigged (she had participated in Bigg Boss 2). Does that mean Survivor India won’t be rigged? Or will Payal end up as the winner just so that she won’t make any such claims again? We will know once the show starts airing on January 6.

Has Bipasha Basu forgotten Kareena Kapoor?

The Players actor has a lot to say about her other Ajnabee co-stars, but nothing about Bebo. Or has it all been said already?

If you thought female actors can’t be just friends with the male actors, think again. Bipasha Basu has revealed that her favourite co-actors are Bobby Deol and Akshay Kumar. She starred with both of them in her debut film, the Abbas Mustan flick Ajnabee. “Both Bobby and Akshay are going to be my favourites because I didn’t know what I was doing in Ajnabee and (it was due to) the kind of support they gave me, including the directors, that I decided to be an actor,” she said at an event in Kolkata recently. We are just surprised that she didn’t mention the fourth lead actor of Ajnabee – Kareena Kapoor. It was Kareena who taught her a lot about relationships. Remember how the two had fought during the making of Ajnabee? Bebo had even allegedly called Bips a “kaali billi” (black cat). Since then, Bipasha hasbeen far more careful about how she treats her fellow B-towners and who she takes pangas with. Even when she and Katrina Kaif shared cold vibes during the shoot of Race because of the fight between their boyfriends John Abraham and Salman Khan, Bips kept her cool and did not let it affect her work. In fact, she has only positive things to say about her other female co-stars – Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba (Bachna Ae Haseeno), and more recently, Sonam Kapoor (Players). So how come she’s forgotten the one actor who made it all possible? Not even a teeny weeny thank you. Tsk tsk.

Salman Khan avoids sitting behind the wheel

Birthday boy Salman Khan has transformed from a passionate lover into an impassive user, when it comes to cars, of course!

Salman Khan recently confessed in an interview that he lost interest in cars after he got involved in unpleasant accidents that he desperately wanted to avoid. Since then Khan has kept an arm’s length from the driver’s seat and makes it a point to see that even his driver is uber careful with the way he manoeuvres the car. The Ek Tha Tiger hunk also says that people gift him expensive cars on various occasions, but he’s so affected by what happened in the past that it has turned him into a guy who’s no more passionate about these mean machines. Now considering its Sallu bhai’s birthday today, the message is loud and clear. Think twice before presenting him a luxurious car ‘coz the actor might just turn it down and all you will be left with is disappointment and dejection.

Hrithik Roshan: I’m playing the underdog in ‘Agneepath’!

The star cast of Agneepath – Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt – as well as the producer-director duo of Karan Johar and Karan Malhotra were in form at the launch of the film’s theatrical trailer recently. The megastars and the makers of the film told us a little of what Agneepath is all about…

When Hrithik Roshan turned up sporting a ponytail, showing off his lean yet sculpted body and wearing black aviators mounted on his arrow-shaped nose, the screams reached ear-splitting decibels. Priyanka Chopra leaned on the arm of the Greek god and looked sizzling hot in an outfit that accentuated her curves even further….and the applause got even more intense! Sanjay Dutt, who’s playing the villain Kancha Cheena in the film, received loads of taalis and unending ceetees as he walked in, bald head and earrings gleaming in the overhead lights. Producer Karan Johar looked suave in his black suit and was accompanied by Karan Malhotra, the young director of the film. Kjo was his usual eloquent self. And from Vijay Deenanath Chauhan (Hrithik) to Kancha Cheena, and from Kaali (Priyanka) to Karan, the cornerstones of the film took their seats and faced the rapid-fire……
After watching the promo, we sense that the massive, scary and larger-than-life character of Kancha Cheena played by Sanjay Dutt clearly overpowers Hrithik’s young Vijay Deenanath Chauhan….
Karan Malhota: It’s not a deliberate attempt to make the villain big enough to overshadow the hero. The villain of the film is big because the achievement of the hero had to be bigger in the end. It is absolutely inappropriate to say that the Kancha is bigger than Vijay. The two characters go hand in hand. You can’t separate the good from the evil and vice-versa.
Sanjay Dutt: If you see the Batman series or Spiderman, for that matter, the villain is more powerful and there’s a reason for that. It is quite obvious. I think that when the villain is powerful, the hero becomes more powerful to beat the villain. So they balance each other out!
Hrithik Roshan: The answer is very obvious. Have you seen his (Sanjay Dutt) size? Anybody who stands in front of Sanjay Dutt is bound to get overshadowed. (laughs)
Priyanka Chopra: Let’s keep it simple – the bigger the villain, the bigger the hero.
How different is Hrithik’s Vijay compared to Amitabh Bacchan’s in the original Agneepath?
Karan Johar: Essentially, the character of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan is completely different from the way Amitji portrayed it in the original Agneepath. In that film Vijay was not an underdog, but in the remake Vijay is a younger boy. So it’s important to understand that this character is played by a younger actor too. Vijay was portrayed by Amitji at a certain age when he did the film. And because the character is now played by a younger man, he becomes an underdog. So the story is how this underdog rises against this impactful, big and scary villain( Kancha). That’s when you see the triumph of the hero’s spirit. You can’t compare the style and swagger of Amitabh Bachchan, because then you will seem silly. Remember, you can’t emulate Krrish, because Hrithik owns it. Similarly, Amitji owns that spirit, that swagger of Vijay’s character. You can’t copy the established. We had to deconstruct the film and remake it in a particular way so that when the underdog emerges, you feel the high. This film is about the emergence of an underdog.
HR: Films I think are made for entertainment and what makes Agneepath even more entertaining is how my character, this kid, takes on an impossibility and beats a Goliath. Is it possible? No, it is not! But can he make it happen? Now go and watch the film to find out!
Karan Malhota: The basic story of the film remains the same – it’s a revenge story. It is a story where a son takes revenge for the death of his father, but the similarity ends there. In the first five minutes you will move beyond the old story and relate to the new one instead. Hopefully we have been successful in achieving that.
There’s a school of thought that says that classic films like Don, Sholay or Agneepath should not be touched. Were you apprehensive about making this one?
Kjo: I believe that this film is more of a revisiting or an adaptation of the original. You can’t make an exact remake. We have paid homage to the original Agneepath. There was no attempt to make a better film than the original. We are simply trying to pay tribute to the film that my father produced. I wanted to show respect and pay homage to Mukul S Anand’s Agneepath and Mr Bachchan’s towering performance and give the story our own world. If you see this film – right from the love story between Kaali and Vijay to Kancha’s evil deeds – everything is portrayed in our own world.
PC: I think the point here is that people of this generation, the younger lot, may not have seen the original film. For example, I had not seen the original Agneepath and had not experienced its magic. So be it the remake of Don, or of Agneepath, it’s a tribute to those films. The repackaging is done so that we can experience these beautiful films again. It’s not that we want to make a better film than the original Agneepath. No, we are not trying to do that. We are simply remaking a film today’s young generation can identify with.
What went into portraying these larger-than-life characters?
SD: My look has been thought of by director Karan Malhotra. The only difference in my character and the one that Danny saab played in the original film is that Danny saab had a full head of hair, but I am bald. I had to shave my head thrice to look the part! We have tried to make this character larger-than-life. Now let’s hope people like my character as well.
HR: I grew my facial fuzz and a long mane, Sanju baba shaved his head and we came on the set – that’s all.
PC: This is the second time I am playing a Marathi mulgi. The character’s name is Kaali. This role had to be different from the character of Sweety in Kaminey. Kaali is different in a sense that unlike Sweety, she’s very strong. She’s the strength of Vijay. She’s a happy soul, a total prankster, very naughty, yet very strong emotionally.
Karan, were you apprehensive giving the reins of direction into the hands of young director Karan Malhotra, given the fact that you were remaking a classic?
Kjo: Karan (Malhotra) is making a multi-crore film for the first time. I don’t have to say anything more but for the fact that I have implicit trust, faith and respect in his talent. None of us can say anything beyond the fact that he’s been given a chance to make a monstrous budget film that Agneepath is with a big star cast that speaks for itself, just for the faith we have in Karan’s talent.
Karan Malhotra, tell us about your experience of directing massive stars like Hrithik, Priyanka and Sanjy Dutt for this multi-crore film…
KM: I am extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Hrithik, Priyanka and Sanjay Sir in my first film. I have known Hrithik for a long time and worked with him when I was assisting Ashutosh Gowariker in Jodhaa Akbar. So he wasn’t a total stranger to me. He’s the actor who’s totally for the film and never just for his character. He looks at the film as a whole package and not just for the role he plays. Priyanka is a complete live-wire – I had to mellow her down at times; her energy was infectious on the sets. Sanjay Sir has been the biggest supporting factor. He’s been encouraging throughout the process. I don’t think anybody could have played Kancha as well as he did. It was great fun to work with such a great star cast!

Don 2’s a hit, but Sahil Shroff won’t quit modelling

He wants to be a part of both film and modelling worlds for a few more years

Sahil Shroff surprised everyone when he bagged a role in Don 2. The model has been appreciated a lot for his work on the ramp and in television commercials but as several others will tell you, it’s not easy to make the switch from modelling to cinema. The debutant may not have much screen time in Don 2, but as someone who is in love with Roma (Priyanka Chopra) and is helping her catch Don, Sahil’s character has enough substance to satisfy him. However, Sahil is clear he isn’t giving up modelling for films. He said in a recent interview that he will continue to straddle both worlds for another five years or so till he is able to really explore his capabilities as an actor. Modelling, he says, gives him a high. Looks like Sahil has more sense than his predecessors Milind Soman, Arjun Rampal and John Abraham. Milind is yet to make it big, while it took Arjun seven years and 20 films to prove his mettle and win a National Film Award for Rock On!! John Abraham’s route to stardom was slightly easier as his very first film Jism was a hit, but it’s seen more downs than ups since then. All three of them are not known to be good actors. Hopefully, Sahil will have better luck.

Katrina Kaif: It’s great that Salman loves ‘Chikni Chameli’

Katrina Kaif says dancing to the item song in Agneepath was a lot of hard work

Katrina Kaif is garnering a lot of praise for gyrating to item number Chikni Chameli in Karan Johar’s forthcoming film Agneepath, but the actor says the ‘lavni’ style dancing was not a cakewalk for her. “The response to Chikni Chameli has been fun so far. It was hard work. It was very fast and it was not a style I was used to, but I took it as a challenge…I think we all went for it as a team and did the best we could. I am happy people are liking it,” the 27-year-old actor said while launching new range of Panasonic airconditioners in Mumbai.
Even actor Salman Khan is smitten by the song and Katrina is happy about this. “He has not told that to me but I think that’s a great thing. He has a great taste in music and songs. So, if he likes it, then it’s great,” said Katrina who featured in two more item numbers in Sheila ki jawani and Bodyguard.
New Year is round the corner and Katrina is pleased with the way 2011 shaped up for her. “2011 has been a really great year for me. All the goals I had in hand, I think everything turned out really well. I am very grateful for that…The best I could have wanted to come out of every project has come true this year,” said Katrina who had two releases this year – Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Katrina has some plum projects in her kitty – she is working on Ek Tha Tiger with Salman, Dhoom:3 with Aamir Khan, and Yash Chopra’s untitled new venture featuring Shahrukh Khan.
