Pavitra Rishta’s Puru Chibber: I can never leave television for Bollywood

The actor – who will enter Zee TV’s top-rated show as Sachin Deshmukh, nephew of Manav and Archana – gets chatty about his dream of becoming a cricketer and what he wants to change about the television industry

You may remember him as Hameer Rizvi in Yash Raj Films’ television show Khotey Sikkey or, if you are a true Bollywood fan, as Ranveer Singh’s friend in Band Baaja Baaraat. Soon you will learn to love him as Sachin Deshmukh in Zee TV’s Pavitra Rishta. Puru Chibber has just made his entry in the Ekta Kapoor show as Manav and Archana’s unhappy nephew. He lets us in on why he became an actor, his television dreams and competing with his well-known mom, Vibha Chibber:
Sachin was not a very happy child. How will he be as a grown up?
Sachin loves his dad and he hates Archana, because that’s what his grandmother (Savita) has always told him. She insists that Shravani is his true mother and that makes him want his dad to get together with her instead of with Archana. But whether Sachin is a negative or positive character – you’ll know only when you watch the show.
Pavitra Rishta is very different from Khotey Sikkey. What made you accept the role of Sachin?
I had never watched the show, but everyone I spoke to knew about Pavitra Rishta. It’s very successful. After Khotey Sikkey, I wanted to do more commercial television. What better place to start than Balaji Telefilms? Before this, I had received many other offers, but nothing worked out, for various reasons. With Pavitra Rishta, everything just fell into place. Our ratings have increased by 2 to 3 points since last week (when the generation leap occurred).
Most of the actors in Hindi soaps get identified with the role they first become famous for. Aren’t you worried that if you get known as Sachin, it will be difficult to be accepted as another character later on?
For a couple of months after Khotey Sikkey ended, everyone called me Hameer. But eventually people think of you as an actor playing a role, rather than as one particular character. I am not worried. I just take things as they come.
How did you become an actor?
When I was young I wanted to be a cricketer. Then when I was in Std VIII, I played Irrfan Khan’s son in The Warrior. It went on to win a couple of BAFTA awards. I loved the attention, loved the acting, loved knowing how films are made. That’s when I told my mom (veteran actor Vibha Chibber) that I wanted to be an actor. After I completed my Std XII exams, I came to Mumbai.
Aren’t you competing with your mom’s show – Mrs Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein – on the same channel?
Arrey, there’s no competition. She is my mom, after all. She is very happy for me. She is used to do Bidaai earlier and I used to go on the sets often. I became very good friends with Kinshuk (Mahajan), Angad (Hasija), Sara (Khan)… all of them are doing Zee shows now.
Male characters usually have precious little to do in soaps, as most are female-oriented. Doesn’t that bother you?
That’s how TV works right now. And even in real life, it’s a women-oriented world now. Women are getting ahead of guys.
So it’s not something you want to change on television…Is there anything you will like to see change?
I would love the audiences to accept more genres. The youth and about ten percent of the total audience accepted Khotey Sikkey. People should take more risks on television. There are a few shows like Parvarrish on Sony and Mrs Kaushik on Zee that are different. The audience should accept all instead of just the usual stereotypical ones. Even actors will get the chance to do different roles. Otherwise they get bored of doing the same types of roles and move to films.
Do you have any such plans?
I would love to do films. But TV is as big as Bollywood. In fact, more people watch TV than movies. I want to do television my whole life. I can never leave TV. I would like to act in movies while working in television shows. Ekta Kapoor was right when she said (at a recent event), ‘If you leave TV, TV will leave you’. TV is what made you what you are.

Malaika Arora Khan, Imran Khan, Priyanka Chopra to add shine to the ‘Bigg Boss 5′ finale

While Imran and Priyanka will be present to promote their films, item queen Malaika will show her sexy moves at the BB5 finale

As we write this, we are told that Salman Khan is planning a sizzling finale for his reality show, Bigg Boss 5. Now we all know that in the recent past the actor has been creatively involved in more than one way with his projects, so this is no big surprise. Recently the Dabangg dude got Yash Raj Films, who are usually not open to suggestions, to rope in his favourite music-composers Sajid Wajid as he was unhappy with the original music director’s composition for Ek Tha Tiger. Anyway, coming back to Salman and Bigg Boss 5 finale, we have found out that he has coaxed his co-host, Sanjay Dutt to get jiggy with him on stage. They are not the only ones to shake booty. B-town’s favourite item queen Malaika Arora Khan will also be showing her latkas and jhatkas on a medley of her item songs. The other stars to make an appearance for the finale are Karan Johar accompanied by Priyanka Chopra and Imran Khan to promote their films, Agneepath and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu respectively. Now that definitely sounds like an interesting line up. Let’s just hope all these stars add sparkle to the finale and more so, coz this could be Salman’s last season as the host. As a li’l birdie told us that the Bodyguard star hasn’t said ‘yes’ to the next season… Let’s hope maybe by the time the finale he changes his mind.

Katrina Kaif dazzles at Auto Expo 2012 in Delhi

After Salman Khan promoted an Audi at a Mumbai event, it’s now Katrina’s turn to do so at the 11th Auto Expo in the Capital

A galaxy of stars from B-town right from Ranbir Kapoor, John Abraham to Amitabh Bachchan are finding their way to New Delhi, where the largest auto fare, Auto Expo 2012 is currently being held. And now we hear Katrina Kaif dazzled the Auto Expo by launching the Audi Q3. It seems Katrina and her ex-boyfriend Salman Khan have a thing for Audi. Salman was gifted a swanky white Audi Q7 at a recent event in Mumbai. It was the same car that he used in his super hit film Bodyguard and Sallu bhai was more than happy to add one more beauty (a car that is!) to his collection! Salman did not fail to mention back then that even Katrina loves this car as much as he does. And proving the Bodyguard actor’s point Kat was seen posing right alongside a brand new, chakachak red Audi. Too bad she wasn’t gifted one but she can always share Salman’s car now, can’t she?

PLAYERS Movie Review: All set to lose the game

Abbas-Mustan’s mega action-thriller Players, unlike their previous outing Race, doesn’t have many twists and turns initially but once they start spilling there’s no stopping them, turning an already boring film into a laughable and cringe-worthy affair. Read review…

Neil Nitin Mukesh’s character, Spidey, raises a toast and roars “may the best player win!” Sitting in the theatre waiting for the film to get over, you secretly mumble, may all the players be shot dead and let’s get it done with! Your mumbling doesn’t stop there. You secretly hope that none of the entities who have been bumped off so far get resurrected from their deathbed to stretch an already burdensome plot to the tipping point of boredom. But, alas, nobody’s really listening to you. Cars keep on somersaulting and the plot and sub-plot get all clogged up. Snazzy gadgets and shiny people get rolled out in some of the best locales in the world, but nothing seems to hold your interest. Even the best of camera work (Possibly, the only credit-worthy thing about Players) and the stunning-looking Bipasha and Sonam start getting on your nerves after a point.
Abhishek Bachchan (Charlie) is a smart thief who can steal anything from right under your nose with the help of his lady love Ria (Bipasha Basu). Charlie looks up to a jail inmate Victor Dada (Vinod Khanna), whose daughter Naina (Sonam Kapoor) is a master in ethical hacking. Victor and Charlie, with the able assistance of three specialists – an illusionist (Bobby Deol), a prosthetic expert (Omi Vaidya), a car specialist (Sikandar Kher) and a top techie (Neil Nitin Mukesh) hatch the plan of robbing gold worth Rs. 10,000 crore. And as expected they pull off the feat. Well, as expected in any heist film, one of the players turns out to be a traitor and wants to hog all the gold. Then the player goes on a killing spree to eliminate the rest of them. But, by the curious twist of fate, a few of them make a comeback (from heaven or hell we don’t know!) to get the stolen gold back from that the player who had turned hostile.
Players is based on the 2003 Hollywood flick The Italian Job. While the original film intrigues you and propels the narrative with a chain of events like betrayal, murder and double crossing, this Indianised version springs unnecessary and even juvenile twists in a desperate attempt to surprise. The first half of the film, despite the lack of any shock value is watchable in parts. The second half though escalates from being predictable to boring and ultimately becomes a pain to watch. So much so that you become numb to the twist-and-turn saga. The wavering narrative goes for a toss and everything becomes a tedious affair. Generally, films like these compel us to collect the scattered pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and attempt to form a clearer picture. In the case of Players, the emerging picture is so hideous that you stop picking up the totally unconvincing cues.
As for the performances, the lesser we talk the better. Abhishek Bachchan is not an ounce different from his last duds Game and Dum Maro Dum. Bipasha Basu looks hot and has delivered a decent performance. Sonam Kapoor struggles to find a place for herself in the film. She hams, cries and mouths her lines but you just don’t empathise. Omi Vaidya’s one-liners elicit a few giggles. Bobby Deol has played his part well while Sikandar Kher has one expression throughout the film and fails to impress. Neil Nitin Mukesh, for some reason, seems to be obsessed with stretching his eyebrow or flashing a lop-sided cunning smile throughout the film. It gets repetitive. Vinod Khanna has done a pretty good job and Johnny Lever’s histrionics provide the much needed respite from the plot. Pritam’s music is uninspiring, flat and boring. The only positive aspect of the film is its lavish cinematography. Overall, Players is all set to lose this game!

Salman Khan gears up for `10 Ka Dum’

The actor is pretty clear in his head that he doesn’t want to do anything related to the mad house (Bigg Boss 5) anymore and while speculation is rife that it’s his new project, 10 Ka Dum on Sony that’s keeping him busy, wethink there are other reasons as well that have riled Mr Khan up

Sallu bhai isn’t exactly known for his anger management skills and despite this well-known foible of his, people still manage to irk this hot-headed man every now and then. Mr Khan took charge of the mike for Bigg Boss 5 this year but ended up getting showered with sharp thorns instead of velvety roses. Right from getting accused of favouritism to being biased and controlling the show as per his own whims, Salman has hitherto been quite a soft target. And if you are thinking that Sallu is now a changed man and doesn’t bother about such trivial remarks anymore, well you are wrong darling; the actor knows how to take his own sweet revenge. So Mr Khan has now bid goodbye to Colors (temporarily we hope) and is gearing up to host 10 Ka Dum on Sony. He has hosted DKD before, so this new venture should be a cakewalk for the actor. Guess one channel’s loss is the other channel’s gain. But we trust the TV honchos to have learnt their lesson by now and keep their stars happy. Hope Sony makes sure that Khan is kept happy or else it won’t be long enough before he shifts his loyalties and hops on to another place where he will be treated like a king, after all that’s what he wants right!
