‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’ banks upon Valentine’s Day to maximise box office profits
After enjoying a decent start at the box office, the Imran Khan-Kareena Kapoor romantic flick is looking forward to making the most of February 14
After opening with a lukewarm response and netting only Rs. 5 crore on Friday, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu picked up in the next two days taking the figure to a decent 12.5 crores over the weekend. We learn that the multiplex audience enjoyed the film but the response from single screens is not welcoming. Directed by Shakun Batra and produced by Karan Johar, EMAET marks Karan’s second successful outing of the year after his super hit film Agneepath which had collected whopping 23 crores on the opening day alone. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu has bagged mixed reviews. While many liked Imran and Kareena’s hatke chemistry in the film, some thought the film was too underplayed for their liking. Though it opened well at the overseas box office windows too, EMAET did not quite strike a chord with a traditional, single screen movie-goer in India. The production house spent Rs. 30 crores on the making and the publicity of the film, but has already recovered Rs. 15 crores from the satellite rights alone and another Rs. 6 crores from the music rights. So whatever money the film is making now will only amount to profits. In the international market, which includes Britain, North America, Gulf and Australia, EKAET did an impressive job and went on to bag Rs. 3.65 crore over the weekend. The makers are keeping their fingers crossed and hoping that Valentine’s Day manages to boost the overall collections of the film.
Vidya Balan gets nostalgic at ‘Kahaani’ music launch

Ever since the trailer of her film Kahaani has come out, there is a lot of positive buzz about Vidya Balan and the film. The actor seems to have sunk her teeth into an author-backed role, where she plays the role of a pregnant woman who is searching for the father of the child that she is carrying. The makers of Kahaani, including director Sujoy Ghosh, made a smart move by choosing to launch the music at the popular Kala Ghoda Arts Festival in south Mumbai. The launch was attended by many music lovers and appreciated by all.The crowd went berserk when Vidya Balan showed up on the stage and started screaming ‘Ooh la la’ – a song from her last film, The Dirty Picture – but she tried to stick to the film she was there to promote. When the enthusiasm of the crowd started dipping, she spoke about the days when she was in college and how she would hoot and cheer for anything and everything the celebs would say. This warmed the crowd up a bit, especially those who were studying at the same college as hers.
After Vidya, director Ghosh took to the stage and expressed his gratitude for those who were present. Finally, the music composer duo Vishal-Shekhar made it to the venue and caused a stir. Much to the disappointment of those present, the composers didn’t sing anything from. After a bit of goading, Vishal hummed two lines of Ooh la la and also Aami shotti bolchi from Kahaani. The CDs of Kahaani were thrown at the audience who went back home satisfied. But one thing which was very apparent at the event was that the audience has still not gotten over Vidya’s ‘dirty’ image. Prateik’s journey in B-town started off with a supporting role as Genelia D’Souza’s brother in Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. Since then the actor has been inundated with character roles rather than meaty main lead offers. But the point to ponder is – why don’t filmmakers and industry insiders who go raving about the actor’s acting skills and persona bother to cast him in something more substantial? On his resume the actor just has one movie to boast about in which he hogged the limelight all by himself. Breaking the character role curse, Prateik finally had a My Friend Pinto in his kitty as the main lead, but even that bombed miserably. There’s no denying that legendary artist Smita Patil’s son definitely has some mojo that makes him stand out in the crowd, but when it comes to fitting the mould of an out-an-out Bollywood hunk, we think this usually spaced out actor doesn’t have the necessary earmarks for it. Usually disinterested in the whole process of making himself known to the audience, the Ekk Deewana Tha star is not a very good conversationalist, the evidence being in the monosyllabic replies he blurts out at press conferences and interviews. Also, language is a barrier for him which obviously comes in the way of him becoming a veritable Bollywood superstar. His Hindi still needs to be a li’l more refined and his emoting a tad more convincing. All this, along with a plain lack of enthusiasm, the requisite passion for cinema and an inspiring and iconic personality he needs to make it to the B-town’s top-cat domain.He definitely needs to show the drive and the spark, till then maybe he has enough to do with main lead roles in small budget movies and supporting character offers.

The Dhoom movies are the only successful films Uday has in his kitty and he is leaving no stone unturned to make the most of the opportunity he’s got in the next one. The actor, who is quite a Twitter buff, had gone missing from the social networking site, only to come back and post about how hard he’s been training for the film. “Sorry people…been living on a motorcycle these days and if you thought it was hard to tweet and drive try tweeting and riding…Finally managed.And yes I’m training for Dhoom 3…broke a bike today, bike tried to break me instead but I won!!!” tweeted the beefy actor. Dhoom is a highly hyped film mainly because of its humungous cast which includes Aamir Khan in a baddie avatar, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji. We are sure that Uday is working extra hard so that he gets noticed in a movie that’s crowded with big stars. Let’s see if all the training pays off!
The Kahaani director also says his last film Aladin flopped because he didn’t engage the viewers
It’s not easy to take the responsibility of failures, but Sujoy Ghosh does it and says his Aladin bombed because he failed to narrate an engaging story. Now he has moved on with Kahaani and feels there is no point in fretting over past mistakes. “If a film doesn’t work, the reason is simple – as a director I have failed to tell you a story. You have given me the trust to come and see the film and the moment I fail to keep you on the seat I fail to tell you a story,” said Ghosh, whose Aladin bombed despite a huge star cast. “Aladin flopped because I failed to tell a story,” added the director who seems to have learnt tricks of the trade after tasting failure. “You have to move on. This is one industry where you can learn anything out of failure. It is a waste of time if I sit and post-mortem the reason behind the failures.”
While the promos of Kahaani are getting a positive response, Ghosh explains how Kahaani, which has Vidya Balan in the lead role, was conceived. “Basically, Kahaani comes a long way. The transformation that a woman goes through when she becomes a mother and how overnight she becomes so protective – this change is fascinating! I wanted to explore how a woman would react when her husband goes missing. How would she survive?”
Thanks to the stupendous success of The Dirty Picture, Vidya is one actor every director wants to work with. But Ghosh clarifies that he had contacted her much before the film. “In fact, I had approached Vidya for the film even before Ishqiya,” he said and added that he had been planning to work with Vidya for a long time but things fell in place only with Kahaani. “I can’t imagine anyone other than Vidya for the role because for me, Vidya comes first and then the film. I anyway wanted to work with her.”
In Kahaani, Vidya plays a pregnant woman who flies down to Kolkata to find her missing husband, while The Dirty Picture has left a strong impact on the audiences and she is termed as a sexy actor. But the director feels a versatile actor can pull off any role with ease. “I don’t think Vidya is termed as a sex symbol. She is a realistic actor. Needless to say she is versatile. I don’t think it matters as she can pull off any roles,” he said.
Ghosh himself has tried various genres in his career – after starting with musical film Jhankaar Beats (2003), he directed Home Delivery and then Aladin. His Kahaani, coming out March 9, is a thriller. He has not only shot the film in Kolkata but also explored the dark lanes and alleys of the city he is so familiar with. “For me, the reason behind shooting in Kolkata was that the world (in the film) has to look believable. As a writer, I have to know my city – the darkness and the light of the city. I know Kolkata and I wanted to exploit it to the peak in terms of characterisation,” he said.
Ghosh, who has written, directed and produced the film, believes it becomes easier for him to justify his characters when he writes a script himself. “I can justify the character. It becomes easier for me to explain my crew members and star cast, how I look at the characters and how to capture that image,” he said.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu: Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor share an easy camaraderie
The actors are effortlessly attractive and relentlessly charming in their first outing together, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu
Garry Marshall, director of the blockbuster Pretty Woman, once said that in romantic comedy, ‘you don’t cast actors, you cast chemistry’. Shakun Batra, co-writer and director of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, gets that. He pairs Kareena Kapoor with Imran Khan (the media has consistently spotlighted the fact that she is older – ironic considering that the Khan trinity is now working with girls 20 years younger but an older heroine puts everyone in a tizzy). The two are effortlessly attractive and relentlessly charming. He is sweet. She is saucy. Together they share an easy camaraderie that doesn’t sag even when the film does.Batra also takes a routine story – strangers get drunk and marry in Las Vegas – that has been done in films like What Happens in Vegas and television shows like Friends and imbues it with just enough off-kilter moments and characters to make it interesting. So Rahul Kapoor, played by Imran, is saddled with hideously upmarket and upwardly mobile parents while Riana Braganza, played by Kareena, has a father who casually asks if they’ve had sex. It’s fun stuff and Batra, along with writer Ayesha Devitre, keeps the dialogue fresh.What doesn’t work as well is the pacing and songs (music by Amit Trivedi), which are breezy, especially Aunty ji, but too frequent. The film does seem hung-over with the ghosts of rom-coms past. The Las Vegas skyline, nicely styled clothes and Rahul’s gorgeous apartment all echo producer Karan Johar’s oeuvre of NRI fantasies. But thankfully, just as proceedings start to feel stale, Batra shifts them to India and introduces us to a host of new characters and one nicely done climactic dinner party in which the thunder is stolen by chopsticks.
Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu isn’t crackling entertainment but it succeeds as an amiable, pleasant diversion. I recommend that you catch it.

We can’t say if all the hard work was worth it considering the movie was a dud, but we must say his raw and rugged look wins all the brownie points from us. Now that Imran Khan has got into the same situation, we are sure SRK is one person who will absolutely empathise with the Khan kid and perhaps give him a tip or two on how to deal with such an annoying predicament. Also, the director of the film Vishal Bhardwaj, who we heard has become super sensitive these days and tends to get paranoid whenever anyone mispronounces the name of his film, can make sure he wraps up ASAP so that poor Immie can finally get back to his smooth and slick state.All we can say is that we appreciate the men for managing their mane, moustache and macho so diligently. Keep it up, boys!
