In its third week, ‘The Voice’ did a great job of reminding us all what the show is really about.
The Feb. 13 episode of The Voice featured contestants who surprised the coaches with their voices — but shocked them even more when they turned their chairs to see who the voices came from!Starting off the night was 27-year-old folk singer Sarah Goden. The show annoyingly kept us guessing about her gender, only showing her hands, feet and back, as she sang “You and I” by Lady Gaga. Sarah began what was a string of contestants that were the epitome of what The Voice is about: The looks of the contestant do not matter; it’s the voices that the coaches rely on to chose. In the end Sarah chose “ladykiller” Cee Lo Green.
Next up was Pip. Yes, that’s it. Just Pip. The 19 year old, who sang “House of the Rising Sun” and whose nerdy sense of style Carson Daly loved, expressed how people don’t take him seriously due to his look and youth. But he thinks his voice is really mature — and mature it was.
“You have an old soul, Pip” Cee Lo told him. “You are what epitomizes the show,” said Adam Levine. “I had no idea what I expected when I turned around. And that’s what I love about it.” In the end, Pip returned the love by choosing Adam.
28-year-old Erin Martin, who used to model and fascinated the guys with her good looks, surprised everyone with her raspy/quirky take on the overly covered “Hey There, Delilah.” While one might have expected an R&B songstress or pop diva out of Erin, she was more along the lines of Duffy or Lenka. “You are a wonderful creature of a woman,” Cee Lo told Erin before she chose him.
James Massone, who works at a family car shop in Boston, came out with a Justin Bieber-like voice to surprisingly get three coaches to turn around — and to their amazement, they saw a 23-year-old man. James almost broke out in tears as he tried to choose between Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo, but eventually team Cee Lo got another member.
Carson made another invitation delivery, this time to Winter Rae at her bowling alley job, which apparently, in this economy, allows her to pay the rent where she lives. The tattooed, mohawked, blue-haired singer looks like she could be a member of a hardcore metal band, but instead she sang with an R&B flare. Unfortunately Winter didn’t get picked by any of the coaches, but left with a positive attitude — plus a hug and the support from friend Perez Hilton.
Closing the night, and ending the “I’m not who you think I am” batch of auditions, was Jordis Unga. The proud Swedish-and-Hawaiian contestant wowed Blake a couple of seconds into the song. Her raspy Janis Joplin chops clinched Cee Lo and Christina, causing Blake to throw an unnecessary tantrum — and in the end, Jordis chose him.
So far this season, the show seems to be living up to it’s name, as well as its promise to judge contestants based on their talent and not their physicality. After all, isn’t that what The X Factor is for? The Voice isn’t looking for the next Britney Spears, but rather, the next Adele.
