Photographer Meenal Agarwal captures Bollywood’s glitterati in the most unlikely of moods and moments
When the sun’s shining bright Meenal Agarwal’s romancing the Hasselblad (a medium format, war time camera), but when the brightest star sets, she steps into the big boots of a production designer. She has designed many ad films and Bollywood flicks – like Mixed Doubles, Mithya, Quick Gun Murugun, Paapu Can’t Dance Saala, et al. In filmi circles she’s also known as actor-director Rajat Kapoor ’s better half.
“Photographs have to tell a story, at least that’s what I feel,” says Meenal and reveals why she prefers the non-mainstream style of image-making – preferably shot on black and white film, in real locations, catching candid moods and moments. “You shoot pretty pictures and it doesn’t tell you anything about the stars. As a photographer, you should spend time with them. You get to know them and bring out your side of a star.”
