Why is Sonam Kapoor grateful to Vidya Balan?

It’s all got to do with The Dirty Picture and No One Killed Jessica

You may think Bollywood heroines are bitchy, catty and jealous beings who can’t stand it if someone else has a hit film. We hear many actors from today’s crop are just like that. But sometimes, an actor performs so well that the only emotion she inspires is awe. Vidya Balan has done it not once, but twice this year. Her performances in No One Killed Jessica and The Dirty Picture actually had audiences flocking to see women-oriented films, something that has awakened hope in Sonam Kapoor. The Players actor said, “We used to have such good female-centric films like Bandini and Guide in the ’60s and ’70s. The ’80s ruined everything. We have regressed since then. But now, female-oriented films like No One Killed Jessica, 7 Khoon Maaf and The Dirty Picture are doing well. Vidya Balan has done a very good job in and The Dirty Picture. Now we (heroines) can put our foot down and say that this proves it’s not about heroes anymore.” Well said, Sonam, but you know what they say about action speaking louder than words? If you actually played a strong character, then we’ll be impressed.

Demi Lovato’s Christmas Message: If You Have An Eating Disorder, Get Help

Demi Lovato Glamour

Demi Lovato wants her fans to know there’s always help — and hope — if you’re struggling with an eating disorder

After lashing out at The Disney Channel for joking about anorexia, Demi Lovato revealed more of her struggle with eating disorders on her Seventeen blog — and encouraged her fans in need to find the help and support they deserve to recover.
“I started compulsively overeating at a very young age,” Demi begins in the blog. “And then I almost stopped eating altogether at the age of 12, after being harassed by kids at school, for being ‘fat’. My eating disorder will continue to affect me for the rest of my life, but I’m proud to say that I got the help I needed, and am now the happiest and healthiest I have ever been!”
Demi, 19, admitted herself into rehab last year for emotional and physical problems, including cutting and eating disorders, and has since been open about her plight, in an effort to help those suffering from similar issues.
The former Disney starlet has also partnered with the Jed Foundation for the Love Is Louder Than the Pressure To Be Perfect campaign, which encourages “everyone to love who they are and embrace the so-called ‘flaws’ that actually make each of us unique.”
Demi concludes her post, writing, “You can get help, and you can feel better. STAY STRONG!”

Kate Middleton Draws 1,000s Of Fans For First Royal Walk To Church On Christmas

Kate Middleton Christmas

Dressed in a stunning coat and hat, the Duchess of Cambridge greeted the more than three thousand people who came to see her on Christmas. Do you see a baby bump?

Not since Princess Diana‘s lifetime has the royal family seen a turn out this big for their walk to Sandringham Church for the traditional Christmas Day service at Sandringham in King’s Lynn, England. More than 3,000 on-lookers came to support and greet Kate Middleton on her Christmas day as a royal family member.
Dressed in a full-length modest maroon coat, black dress, tights and a hat by Jane Corbett, the 29-year-old beauty — alongside her husband, William, and his brother, Harry — looked thrilled to meet her fans and accept bouquets of flowers. There’s been much talk of a baby bump on the new duchess, however, we couldn’t see much beyond her Christmas coat — perhaps she’s hiding the news?
The queen, Prince Charles, Camilla and several other members of the family were also in high spirits this morning. However, the Duke of Edinburgh missed the service, as he is in the hospital after having cardiac surgery Friday.

Is Miley Cyrus Telling Us How Much She Loves Liam Hemsworth In Christmas Tweet?

Miley Cyrus Liam Hemsworth Christmas

Miley Cyrus sent a sweet and special message to her fans Dec. 24, but her very smart advice seems to have been given with a very certain someone in mind. Are things getting even more serious with boyfriend Liam Hemsworth?

Miley Cyrus, thanks for sending out this tweet yesterday: “I hope everyone has a merry xmas. 2 make it more special try 2 spend every second w the ones u love & don’t take their QT away by tweeting!”
That’s such excellent advice to your fans. How many of us forget what is most important in life is to be with the ones we love and who love us?
Miley, I believe, learned that lesson even more last year when her parents, Billy Ray and  Tish, separated for several months after her dad filed for divorce. Miley, 19, made it very clear during that time how heartbreaking it was for her to have her family split apart. She refused to give up hope on her family and said at the time of the split: ” I have a lot of hope in our family.” Fortunately, her parents reconciled and no doubt she’s loving the holidays this year with her family back together.
She and Liam Hemsworth, 21, also had split and got back together this year — so Miley’s message seems to also be very poignantly aimed at boyfriend Liam, as their relationship appears to have gone to the next level of love and commitment.
Thanks Miley for reminding us all to cherish our time with the ones we love!

Aamir Khan: Kiran and me can’t get enough of Azad!

Aamir Khan calls a baby’s birth no less than a miracle

Aamir Khan is clearly a hit with the kids. At the DVD launch of Dhobi Ghat at a SoBo book store last weekend, children were all over him and wanted to ask him all kinds of innocent questions. One kid asked, “How do you play with your baby boy?” Aamir, amused with the question, turned all mushy and replied, “I tickle his toes and snuggle up to him. He is too small right now and doesn’t know who I am. But he knows that someone comes and troubles him! (Laughs) So when he gets a little older, he will know that I’m that guy.” One could see a glimpse of the doting father in Aamir even as he spoke to the kids at the book store. When they got too noisy and a little impatient, he quietened them down in a fatherly way and soon there was absolute silence. “We can’t get enough of Azad,” said Aamir, reminding his fans that Kiran and he have to rush back home because their 23-day-old baby was waiting for them. Aw! It was almost as if his child’s face was flashing across his eyes and he really couldn’t wait to head back and tickle his feet again. Aamir and Kiran’s baby was born through IVF surrogacy on December 1.

Shahrukh Khan to Dawn: I will come to Pakistan

It may be recalled that SRK got into hot water with a right wing political party not so long ago because he’d suggested that Pakistani cricketers be allowed to play in the IPL. Thanks to King Khan’s sentiments, the party also disrupted the release of My Name Is Khan. Now the Badshah of Bollywood has given an interview to Pakistan’s premier newspaper Dawn where he’s said that he will visit our neighbour. He’s also advocated Pakistani artistes working in Bollywood

A true flag flier of Aman Ki Asha is our Khan. Here’s hoping that the right wing politicos don’t blow this up and disrupt the Don 2 release and instead take Khan’s comments in the spirit in which he meant them. Excerpts from the Dawn interview:
Keeping My Name is Khan and the relations between India and Pakistan in mind, do you think films need to absorb the socio-politics around us or influence them? What does good cinema do, in your opinion?
Art is always going to go beyond boundaries. Primarily, all a good film needs to do is entertain. Enjoyable cinema will always transcend boundaries and we are so similar as a people that we laugh at the same things and cry at the same things. But why restrict the Dawn question to India and Pakistan? I’m glad people liked Khan (My Name is Khan) all over the world for a very simple reason. I’m not claiming to know everything but I do know that as a Muslim it’s important for me to tell the world who we really are. It’s important for us to explain Islam to the world and it’s important for the world to know Islam and what it truly stands for. But that’s not the only reason I did the film. It was a good experience.
Indian films are now releasing in Pakistan so at least some boundaries are softening. What do you say about Pakistani artistes working in India?
We speak the same language. This exchange is very important because we have the same background and I hope it continues. Where films are concerned, it’s important to step out and explore new options. I have worked with a lot of singers from Pakistan and I’ve also worked with Akon for RA.One. I feel that new voices bring novelty as well as longevity.
You always had fans in Pakistan but your fanfare reached dizzy heights with MNIK. What are the odds that you’ll come to Pakistan?
One of these days, I will come to Pakistan. I will come to Pakistan when work takes me there.
Work, but not the love of the people?
I find work is an excuse for love. I find love in work.

And, since Cineswami loses no opportunity to coin a cheap pun, here goes:
‘Knock knock’
“Kaun Hai?”
“Dawn, dawn, er, don 2”.

Satyadev Dubey (1936-2011): Tribute to a legend

He was controversial, candid and had a healthy disregard for anything colonial in theatre. The death of Satyadev Dubey has sadly brought the curtains down on an era of fierce Indianness on stage

Mumbai-based director, actor, playwright, screen writer and filmmaker Satyadev Dubey was best known for his play Andha Yug – a comment on the futility of war – by Dharamvir Bharti, which he staged in 1962. It is said that Dubey, who was born in Bilaspur in present day Chhattisgarh in 1936, had moved to Mumbai to become a cricketer. But he ended up in theatre. Director Bhanu Bharti, who produced Andha Yug, told IANS: “He was a remarkable man because he had carved a space for himself on the Marathi stage despite not being a Maharashtrian. He singlehandedly started a new theatre movement.” Critics say that Dubey courted controversy with his criticism of English theatre in India in the 1960s and ’70s, saying it was a colonial legacy and only the elite took part in it. However, he later switched to English theatre himself when he felt that the medium had freed itself from the baggage of British and American influence and English had developed and Indian idiom on stage.
After coming to Mumbai, Dubey joined the legendary Ebrahim Alkazi’s troupe Theatre Unit. Later, when Alkazi came to take over the National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi, Dubey took over the Theatre Unit – and produced several important plays. He produced Girish Karnad’s Yayati and Hayavadana, Badal Sircar’s Evam Indrajit and Pagla Ghoda, Chadrashekara Kambara’s Aur Tota Bola, Mohan Rakesh’s Adhe Adhure, Vijay Tendulkar’s Khamosh! Adalat Jaari Hai, A Raincoat for All Occasions and Jean Anouilh’s Antigone in 2007. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1971.
Dubey also dabbled in films. He won the 1978 National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Shyam Benegal’s Bhumika and the 1980 Filmfare Best Dialogue Award for Junoon. In 2011, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan. Dubey made two short films, Aparichay ke Vindachal and Tongue in Cheek – and directed a Marathi feature film, Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe in 1971 based on Vijay Tendulkar’s play.
The man with the unruly hair was a regular at Prithvi Theatre. According to actor Sonali Kulkarni, “My greatest inspiration in theatre was Satyadev Dubey. I started working with him in the early 1990s and it had been a learning experience every single day…. Dubeyji has taught me that the scale for beauty is not merely how ‘fair’ your complexion was, or the ‘tone’ of your voice… they were elements that you were born with and something you have to live with for life… the only thing as an actor one could do, was to improve one’s acting skills. This has been a very profound lesson for me.” She recalled that the “wonderful thing about meeting Dubeyji is that he rarely spends time on ‘gossip’ or chit-chat… he gets directly to the point and tells me what he liked (or disliked) about my last performance”.
The 75-year-old fiesty theatre personality was hospitalised in September after a massive epilepsy attack that damaged his brain. Dubey died Sunday. In his death, Indian theatre has lost one of its greatest faces.

Justin Bieber: Home For The Holidays — Pics

Ronit Roy: I idolise Anil Kapoor

Ronit Roy is a happy man this Christmas because he will be sharing screen space with Anil Kapoor for their upcoming Shootout at Wadala. We wonder what makes this Kapoor so special for Ronit

Ronit Roy, who was appreciated for his role as a strict father in Udaan, is now set to play police officer in director Sanjay Gupta’s next. But he is most excited about sharing the frame with Anil Kapoor. “Yes, I will play Raja Tambat in Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala. I am proud to co-star with Anil Kapoor, who I’ve idolised since many years for his dedication towards his craft. He plays Isaque Bagwan,” Ronit posted on Twitter. Anil has been a revered actor in tinsel town, but he became a bigger name after featuring in Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. The success of the film helped him bag a role in American TV series 24, as well as a cameo in the recently released Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. In Shootout At Wadala, a prequel to 2007 film Shootout At Lokhandwala, Anil plays a police officer. The film is based on the 1982 incident in which gangster Manya Surve was shot dead in Mumbai. Ronit admits that the script drew him to the project. “Sanjay Gupta narrated the film to me; it blew my mind away. A film which has the potential to be India’s answer to The Godfather. All roles in the film are mind blowing. John Abraham as Manya Surve is the role of a lifetime,” added Ronit, who became a big name on the small screen thanks to shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasautii Zindagii Kay. These days the actor is seen on Sony TV’s Adaalat.
